Linocut image of the growing tip of Macrocystis pyrifera, the world's largest living seaweed. Limited edition, signed and numbered and on trimmed A3 kraft paper - 400x280mm.

Macrocystis pyrifera is the world's largest living seaweed, and might also be the fastest growing organism. Fronds can grow 30 cm in a day. The image is printed from two linocut blocks from a life size drawing of the apical scimitar - the delicate tip of the long fronds. Here new blades and floats are formed, splitting off from the scimitar then continuing to grow as the frond lengthens.

Macrocystis is a complex organism with specialised fertile blades, sexual reproduction and internal transport tissues that move photosynthetic products from the sunlit floating canopy down to the holdfast on the seafloor.

Despite appearing similar to plants, the phaeophyta (brown seaweeds) are a unique evolutionary lineage, distinct from all other multicellular life.

The image is 234 x 228 mm on trimmed A3 kraft paper. Limited edition of 30 signed and numbered prints.
