Emiliania is a genus of Coccolithophorids, a group of marine plankton. Each single-celled individual is enclosed by ornate calcium carbonate scales. Massive blooms of coccoilithophorids leave thick deposits of calcium carbonate on the sea bed that fossilise into chalk – a major carbon sink.
