Azolla rubra
Azolla is that reddish-green weed you often see floating on ponds. Surprisingly, it is an aquatic native fern. Azolla can grow profusely, thanks to a nitrogen-fixing cyanobacterial symbiont. Forty-nine million years ago an Azolla bloom began in the nearly landlocked Arctic Ocean. Studies suggest this “Azolla event” removed carbon dioxide from the earth’s atmosphere, cooling the climate and triggering ice ages and the formation of polar ice caps.
Linocut print on 220 gsm acid-free Fabriano Rosaspina paper. Limited edition of 40.
Paper size is 330 x 490 mm. Print area is 255 x 410 mm.
